on June 4, 2005After reading the books, I didn't really have a lot of hope for this movie. The style looked interesting, suggestive of a Tim Burton movie, but otherwise I thought brining the eccentric stories from the books to life would be nearly impossible.
My fears were completely unfounded. The movie takes the first three books and presents a coherent enjoyable story. Much like the books, it's easily approachable by children, but still has enough in it to keep an adult's interest as well. The Burton-esque style works perfectly with the books. While they may have changed the two main characters a bit to fit them in with the personalities of the actors, it still manages to remain true to the books.
