Ray Release Year: 2004 Average Rating: Last Reviewed On: April 8, 2005 (by Scott) (DVD version) Scott's Review: on April 8, 2005 Important issue number one: I didn't really know much about Ray Charles before watching this movie. Important issue number two: Outside of his drug addiction, and when he became blind, I don't know much about him after watching this movie. I feel really bad giving this movie only three stars. Jamie Foxx gave an awe-inspiring performance as the title role. At times he simply was Ray Charles; it was really amazing to see. But a great acting job doesn't make up for the rest of the movie. It was painfully cut together, complete with made-for-TV type scenes that obviously condensed entire sections of his life into a few little sound bites. Oh, and outside of his drug-laced years, we don't really learn that much of Ray Charles' life. It effectively ends when he's let back into Georgia, for no good reason. Perhaps if you're a huge Ray Charles fan, you'll get more out of this movie just from Foxx's acting abilities, but otherwise, there's not really much here. It's a pity too; it seems this could have been a great movie. -- Scott and Michelle |
