Citizen Kane Release Year: 1941 Average Rating: Last Reviewed On: September 8, 2004 (by Scott) (DVD version) Scott's Review: on September 8, 2004 Generally, when I watch movies from the fifties or earlier, I find myself too lost in the cultural differences between then and now to really enjoy a movie. I really didn't have that problem with Citizen Kane. Sure, there are some big differences in culture between forty-one and now, but they don't overshadow the movie. The story telling, acting, and even cinematography are incredible. It's very easy to see how this makes it to be such a top rated movie of all time. We follow the store of Charles Kane from his farm-boy roots to his rise to fame and fortune, and get to watch how all of the fame lends to plenty of corruption. It's a story that's been told a hundred times, but it's told in a way here that you really end up feeling for all the characters involved in Kane's life. It is interesting; too, the iconic end scene from this movie that's been parodied many times over is a very striking ending. It really pulls at your heart, and I knew exactly how it ends, I can only imagine how much of an impact it would have had if you already known about it. -- Scott and Michelle |
