Hellboy Release Year: 2004 Average Rating: Last Reviewed On: August 1, 2004 (by Scott) (DVD version) Scott's Review: on August 1, 2004 Before I head of this movie, I had never heard of the character Hellboy. That really might effect how much I enjoyed the movie. The enjoyment from watching other superhero movies can be partially explained from the shared memories you have with the movies' creators about the characters they're showing you. When those shared memories are missing, you have to fall back on the standards, like plot and character development. Hellboy wasn't lacking in the plot category. We follow from Hellboy's discovery as a baby after a portal is opened during the WWII timeframe to modern day life as he fights along side the good guys and discovers his true destiny and fights that. Character development, however, is another issue. We have plenty of likeably characters, and really almost cookie-cutter evil villains. Though, it's kind of hard to say, they really get lost in the plot. It jumps around, and in the end, about all I remember from the movie is that Hellboy likes to say "aw, crap" a lot, and there are some cool fire-related special effects. All in all, it's a good popcorn flick, but don't try to figure it out. -- Scott and Michelle |
