on June 1, 2004Get Shorty is a cute enough movie. From the opening it's about a gangster who travels to Hollywood and gets into the movie business. As his worlds merge, he discovers there's not much difference between the two. The movie then devolves into its primary gimmick; it's a story about the writing of itself.
Once you get the gimmick, it really goes down hill. The first quarter is humorous and fast paced, but then it falls into Hollywood and starts to poke fun at then silver screen society and gets really uninteresting really quickly. If it weren't for the ensemble of actors, this movie would be too dull to watch. As it is, it's just slightly too interesting to give up on.
