League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Release Year: 2003 Average Rating: Last Reviewed On: December 18, 2003 (by Scott) (DVD version) Scott's Review: on December 18, 2003 I feel as if I just finished watching a video game. A well acted, and very high budget video game, but a video game nevertheless. See, the movie is interesting enough, but the plot took some bizarre sharp turns. Apparently, for no other reason that continuing the story along to a predestined end. This is largely what reminded me of watching a video game. I would feel that the characters should do something, but when they got near the point of decision, it was removed from them and more plot elements were unveiled, just like I was playing an "immersive" video game. My rant aside, the movie is enjoyable enough. The acting is good enough that I could suspend my disbelief. I don't know a whole lot about most of the characters and their original stories, so I could mostly take them at face value. The only character that bugged me was the vampire character that seemingly had no problems with sunlight. I guess that little character flaw was added later on. Overall though, the characters felt like what they were: comic-book versions of literary greats. Ignoring my story-on-rails to satisfy plot demands, the story was engaging enough, if a bit confusing at times. It's a fun enough movie to watch, but one I can't recommend, or for that matter, recommend avoiding. It just is. -- Scott and Michelle |
