on July 31, 2003Prey is almost formulaic Crichton. Take some technology's disaster scenario, and write an action adventure around it. With that said, it's really good. The technology in question is actually a few combined: nanotechnology, bio-engineering, and swarm programming. The end result is a much feared nano-swarm that's intent on killing everyone for almost no reason.
What really makes this enjoyable, though, is Crichton's writing style. I found myself deeply engrossed in the book, and couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but in the end, found the technological issues a bit too unbelievable to really cause me to think "what if?" Though, I suppose when and if nanotechnology ever becomes a reality, I might change my tune.
