I got the impression that this book served as a bridge for the other books. It was a fascinating look into the pitfalls of being able to see into the future. Basically, the son of Paul Maud'dib does what his father was too scared to do, and launches mankind into the 'Golden Path.'

Like many things in the Dune series, the Golden Path isn't precisely explained, but you're left to figure out what it is in due time. In the mean time, you see how one man, given nearly three thousand years, can attempt to control the fate of mankind. The issue of mankind's dependency on drugs plays a larger role in this book, and more hints are given as the fall and rise of the technological side of mankind. It will be fascinating to see where he goes with this.
