Entering the new age of headphones  (12/4/2009 10:48 am)

I recently decided to try this whole Bluetooth headphone thing to get wireless headphones for my laptop and cell phone. The idea is simple enough: Have wireless headphones to listen to music and podcasts.

The worked without any effort on my cell phone, which I was mildly surprised by. The laptop, however, was another matter. Windows 7 would happily pretend to connect, only dropping the connection a minute later without any error message. I was only able to fix it by downloading some random driver off a sketchy website. Now for my big complaint: I understand the goal is to make the headphones small, but is it necessary to overload each and every button? Press the lock button to change the EQ settings, press and hold the lock button to lock, press the power button to stop playback, press and hold the power button to turn it off, press and hold the power button longer to enter pairing mode, etc, etc. It's crazy.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

I suggested I'd play with turning my Morphing Ticker into a Silverlight plug-in. You should be able see the results of my work next to this post. Well, assuming you have Silverlight installed, and are running some browser that understands it.

It was an interesting conversion process. This was my first real foray into XAML, and it was a bit of a mind shift coming from the Windows Forms background I'm accustomed to. Even with that small hurdle, I was pleased with how easy it was to implement. Now I'll just have to find some practical use for Silverlight.

More with Time  (11/23/2009 8:49 pm)

Enable javascript and get the Flash Player to see this player.

In my continuing quest to play with visualizing time, I came up with a new visualization for my timer application. It's a simple morphing visualization. I'm impressed how organic the results appear.

Perhaps I'll even play with making this a Silverlight plug-in so it can be run online.

Spirographs and Transformers  (10/26/2009 9:36 pm)

This weekend we watched Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. In a desperate attempt to keep my brain from escaping, I spent most of the movie writing a simple little Spirograph Screen Saver. It's not the most interesting thing in the world, but it kept me sane during the movie.

Kinetic EnergyHere's another useless screen saver for your enjoyment. Well, actually, since my screen savers are written with a target audience of one in mind, you might not enjoy it that much, but I find it strangely pleasing.

Seattle to get smart freeways  (10/18/2009 5:51 pm)

Seattle freeways are going to install so called smart signs. You know what sign I'd like to see? It'd be a plain-old dumb sign at the bottom of the Kennydale Hill:

Speed Limit 60
This will require you to press down on the gas pedal to maintain your current speed. It might even require downshifting.

I'm really tired of the traffic jams that this hill causes because people fail to notice they're slowing down to around 40 mph.

Star Wars in Concert  (10/14/2009 11:42 am)

Got to enjoy Star Wars in Concert yesterday with family. It was quite a treat to enjoy the symphony orchestra, and the touches they added to make it entertaining to the masses worked out well. And seeing Anthony Daniels was fun, I'm always impressed at how much he's embraced the C3PO role.

Making you glad to wait  (10/7/2009 4:18 pm)

In a discussion of the future of Blu-ray, one of the minor things being mentioned is how they plan to get rid of load times: By doing the loading during the time when you're being forced to watch previews. In other words, the concept of splash screen is coming to Blu-ray discs, but just in the form of trailers.

Maybe I missed something, but why does setting up a menu, even in a limited device like a set-top player, require any effort? DVDs may have had their fare share of things I couldn't skip, but at least they never made me wait to connect to the internet, download updates, and then compile menus, all so the menus could dance around and find new ways to annoy me.

Because of this YouTube video, my next trip will be to Germany. I don't think I have a choice.
