25 Years of Mtv.

You remember when Mtv used to play videos? Did you know that they even ever did? And did you realize that Mtv actually stands for "Music Television"? and not "Reality Show Crap"?
I was only about 11 when Mtv first came on the air, so I hadn't even developed my own musical taste yet. I was still feeding off the influences of my older cousins. But it's safe to say that Mtv played a significant part in my musical development. Especially once the 80's got going. But in the beginning, videos from Reo Speedwagon, Steve Miller, Chilliwack, Pat Benatar, and even a Rick Springfield video or two had it's regular appearance in the rotation. Some of those are pretty cheesey looking now, sure, but back then, every kid wanted their Mtv.
Today, August 1st, is Mtv's 25th anniversary. Yep, it was on this day in 1981 that Mtv first began corrupting not only the music industry, but the minds of youth. So, to celebrate the milestone, they are replaying their entire first day again. All the original videos it showed during it's first 24hrs on the air. Complete with original segments with the first VJ's; Martha Quinn, JJ Jackson, Nina Blackwood, etc.. Pretty cool if you remember that stuff, which I apparantly do, because I just came up with those names without having to look them up!.
But, they couldn't even be bothered to celebrate their own anniversary on their own channel. Instead, they shoved it over to sister channel VH1 Classic. And somehow, i'm not surprised that Mtv itself couldn't find the time to show it's own first day for it's own anniversary. Nah, they got those all-important marathon repeats of Pimp my Ride and Real World to get on the air. Again. I mean, you can't pass up an opportunity to show Xzhibit putting a blender and a fish tank in some hand-me-down VW bug for the millionth time.
It doesn't really surprise me actually. Mtv lost it's way long ago. I'd bet that no one working at the channel today even knows they used to show videos 24/7. It's really too bad, because Mtv used to be great. But these days, Mtv, Music Television, is no longer about music. They're about reality shows. It's like Mtv has grown old and gotten Alzheimers, because it just doesn't remember anymore what it's supposed to be.
